Colon cancer is also known as colorectal cancer or large bowel cancer and this cancer features growth of cancerous tissue in the internal organs of colon, appendix and rectum. These organs comprise of the digestive system of the human body. This cancer has taken so many lives till date due to the severity of its harmful and adverse effect that it is accounted as the third most widespread and generic form of cancer. - Age factor is one of the biggest reasons behind the Colon cancer because the risk of developing this cancer increases with the growing age.
- Polyps found in Colon can also give birth to cancer in colon and that is why if during colonoscopy, colon polyps are detected and found then they should be removed at that time itself to eliminate any future possibility of Colon Cancer.
- Females who have had ovarian cancer, cancer of uterus or breast also run a high risk of becoming the victim of colon cancer.
- Family history wherein some member has been patient of Colon cancer is also a significant and possible reason.
- Consumption of alcohol and smoking habits are one of the very strong factors that lead to colon cancer at times and that is why it is advisable to avoid such habits to prevent the risk of colon cancer under certain circumstances.
- Some of the other contributory factors account for diet high in red meat and short of fresh fruit, vegetables, poultry and fish amplifies the risk of colorectal cancer. Apart from this physical inactivity, provocative bowel disease, low levels of selenium, exogenous hormones and certain viruses and environmental factors are other causative factors.
